          Stitch Up - An afternoon of sewing in memory of Deanna Davis

Come and celebrate the life and passion of our friend, Deanna, by helping to make quilts for her favorite charity, The Children's Quilt Project.

Fabric kits will be provided.  Just bring your sewing machine or bring your own fabric donation.

People new to sewing are welcome!

In Memory -- Deanna Davis

From the current president of EBHQ comes this sad letter.

"In Memory

I am saddened to announce that Deanna Davis passed on Tuesday, March 3, 2015.  In memory of Deanna’s life, on the following Saturday, the immediate family and a few close friends, met in her garden with her quilts hanging.

We all know the love she had for Children’s Quilts and the Guild as a whole.    I worked with Deanna on the Board for the last four years in her roles as Hostess Coordinator, President and Past President.  She inspired me and I am sure many others to continue our work with the Guild. I know Deanna will be missed by all of us.

Past Event: Call for Quilts!

We have been asked by the Unitarian Universalist Church, if we would be interested in displaying quilts in their Fireside Room. This is the room directly next to where we hold our EBHQ General Meetings each month.The quilts would be a wonderful way to show our work and promote the guild. Do peek into the fireside room at our next meeting to get a feel for the location. Quilts will hang above the fireplace, on a 3-4 month rotation.  A winter themed quilt would be really great for our first installation, but all quilts will be considered. 

Specifics:  

The fireplace is no longer used for fires, and the room is mostly shaded in daylight hours. A sheet can be provided so the back will not get dusty. 

Display will include a short write-up on the artist and our organization next to the quilt. You may also price your quilt for sale.  

Quilt submissions need to be between 40 to 60 inches wide. 

Quilts will need to be in good balance with the fireplace. Photos and sizes should be submitted to Pati Fried at patifried@yahoo.com for consideration. The exhibit team will contact you with information and scheduling. 

This will be an ongoing exhibit, so please keep this in mind for future months.

I also wanted to share part of the lovely letter that I received the Program Coordinator for the Exhibit:

Already we are getting rave reviews about the show! The County employees were extremely excited by the show.  I had several employees tell me about all their many favorites.  One employee even used an online translator to see what the meaning of the African language phrase is on the Kangs of Africa quilt.  The exhibit is a big hit!

It is so nice to bring art to the people who work and visit both the County Administration Building and the Highland Pavillion. It clearly makes them happy.  I could really see the thoughtfulness with which you and your team put into the groupings.  They not only worked very well together but they also worked extremely well in each individual space.  So thank you for all your work on putting it together!

The San Francisco Quilters' Guild has announced its March 2015 show, "Quilt San Francisco", to be held March 20-21, 2015, at the Event Center, St Mary's Cathedral, 1111 Gough Street, San Francisco
They'll bring their opportunity quilt to EBHQ's January meeting, so plan to buy your show tickets then.

This show is run by a commercial vendor (just as PIQF is).  Their website says, "Patchwork Show is Dear Handmade Life’s bi-annual, makers festival showcasing local emerging artists, crafters and designers alongside artisan food, DIY craft workshops, gourmet food trucks and indie music. All Patchwork shows are free to attend and family friendly. Vendors are selected through a jury process and feature clothing for men, women & kids, handbags, accessories, jewelry, art, ceramics, garden finds, home goods, plushies, crochet & knit items, pet gear, kits & patterns, bath & body goodies and more!"

EBHQ’s Alameda County Arts Commission Exhibit

It’s time to enter your quilts in our annual exhibit for the Alameda County Arts Commission (ACAC). Our show is highly anticipated by the County workers and a wonderful way to promote quilting and EBHQ to the public. Don’t miss the chance to be included this year and show off your fabulous work!

The show is located in two well-lit, secure areas, with high traffic that are open to the public during normal working hours, Monday through Friday.

We need up to 40 pieces in a wide range of styles and dimensions. Quilts can be up to 65” in length and of any width, but small and medium quilts are most welcome and show very well. All entry forms and quilts must be turned in by Sept. 29 to allow time to curate the show and compile exhibit information for installation on Oct.24th. You may exhibit more than one quilt as long as you include separate entry and release forms for each. All quilts will be returned at the February General Meeting.

Past Event: Still room in this week's workshops

Want to have some fun this weekend?  Both the Saturday and the Monday workshop have a few openings.  These workshops are taught by Stacey Sharman, a founder of the East Bay Modern Quilt Guild.  Saturday, June 28, 2014 – Improvisational Confetti Quilt, and Monday, June 30, 2014 – Improvisational Split Log Cabin Quilt.

Past Event: WWII Home Front Exhibit Extended

We are excited that Richmond Museum of History has extended the "Quilts of the Home Front “ exhibit through June 29th.  Museum director Melinda McCrary says “Higher than usual visitor volume continues, and we are delighted by this interest.“  Featured are the thirty 2014 challenge quilts, many period items from the Museum’s permanent collection, and three large story quilts about the Japanese American internment on loan to RMH. You still have time to see this great exhibit, or visit again!

Lots Happening at the San Jose Museum of Quilts during May, 2014

Cool stuff is happening at the San Jose Museum of Quilts.

Tuesday, May 6, will be a "day of giving" as the museum kicks off a short fundraising campaign.  If you can contribute, click either of the link here:

Past Event: Quilt Show This Weekend at Vallejo Fairgrounds

The Vallejo Piecemakers have their quilt show this weekend (May 3 and 4, 2014; Saturday till 5, Sunday till 4), and artists in Benecia are having open studios.

Handwoven Fabric Sale at Laura & Kiran

Friday was the first time I'd ever been inside the Berkeley showroom for Laura & Kiran, a firm which imports fabric -- mostly handwoven.  I stumbled onto their spring sale, which is on for several more days.

Above is an interesting ikat fabric. 

The store's website is laurakiran.com, and they're located only a few blocks from New Pieces, at the corner of Page and Fourth in Berkeley (if you are on Gilman, Page is one block south and parallel).  I found street parking without difficulty.

I didn't buy anything ... yet.

Past Event: Texture fans: there's a weaving show in Oakland today and tomorrow

The Conference of Northern California Handweavers (CNCH.ORG) is having its every-other-year conference this weekend, April 26 and 27, 2014, at the Marriott Convention Center in Oakland (roughly 12th and Broadway; easily walkable from 12th St. BART station).  I went yesterday and had fun looking at the exhibits and talking with vendors, including one that had an amazing Laotian loom on display.  Lots of fun fibers for sale, some of which might work well as embellishments for quilts.

Several vendors also offer interesting fabric dyes.

For cheap parking, try the lot at 7th and Washington Street -- $3 cash for the whole day.  (Enter the lot from 7th Street, which is one way heading .)

I've been told there is concern that some members may not want photos of their quilts displayed here on the EBHQ blog, or on the EBHQ website.  If you had an entry in our recent show, and if it is okay for me to post photos of it, please email me with your okay (and if possible, the entry number or name):  raeholmen@gmail.com.

Since the main EBHQ website has a long tradition of showing photos of MANY quilts from our past shows, I would like to see that tradition continued (although I do not post photos on the main website; the webmaster handles that).

The guild historian also likes to have photos from past shows.

WWII Home Front Challenge Gets Great Publicity

Check out the great media coverage EBHQ is getting in the San Jose Mercury, Oakland Tribune and the Contra Costa Times! It is online now, will be in all three papers on Saturday and possibly will get picked up by some of their smaller weeklies. Yay!!!
