Past Event: January workshops replaced by POSTCARD SATURDAY

The two-day workshop scheduled for Jan 27 and 29 has been cancelled. An email sent to all registered participants says, "It is with great regret that we have to inform you that Katie Pasquini Masopust has had to cancel her workshops. Her husband in in critical condition in the hospital in Eureka and she does not want to leave his side."

BUT you can join your fellow EBHQ members for a free session on Saturday from 9 to 3 to make fabric postcards that the guild will sell at our quilt show to raise money. For more information contact Orna Pascal at ebhqpresident@gmail.com

Past Event: Book Sale at Monday's meeting. And remember: no July meeting.

Monday night's meeting will be preceded by a huge BOOK SALE in the building lobby.  So plan to browse and buy!

This will be our last "spring" meeting; no July meeting, then we resume again on August 28.

The workshop is full and has a waiting list, but Yoshiko Wada's talk on Monday evening is open to everyone.  She'll talk about Japanese boro cloth, which I suspect is related in some way to sashiko embroidery.

Marion Coleman's metal quilt is on permanent display at a Berkeley Library branch

The Hopkins-and-Alameda branch of the Berkeley Library has, just off the main lobby in a hallway near the elevator, a gorgeous quilt made of layers of metal, by our guild's own Marion Coleman. 

Past Event: SIlent Auction at this month's meeting -- May 22, 2017

The Silent Auction is a fundraiser for our guild's budget.  Typically, there's a wide range of donations, from hand-made articles to ... well, almost anything.  Knitting yarn.  Quilting frames.

Come to our meeting and see what's offered this year!  Bring friends!

Monday's speaker: Pati Fried

Note; there will NOT be a workshop on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016.
But we do have a speaker for our evening meeting:  Pati Fried, a longtime member of this guild.

Topic:  Modern Traditionalist

Pati says, "We will discuss the principles of modern quilt design and a how to use these as fundamental design elements to challenge your work. Being aware of these principles and design elements can act as a roadmap for venturing into new design territory."

And since Monday is Hallowe'en, guild president Joan Sextro urges everyone to some in costume.

Monday workshop cancelled; searching for new speaker

Jacquie Gering has had a personal emergency and has cancelled her appearances for today and Monday.   Marty and I will hold an open sewing workshop day today with a hope that we can hold a discussion on what was to have been done on Precision Lines.

There will be no open sewing workshop on Monday.

We are in the process of finding a lecturer for Monday night.

Marion Coleman featured in the New York Times

Marion Coleman's quilts were featured Feb. 2, 2016, in the New York Times.  It's rare for New York to even notice Oakland, California, for its contributions to the art world, and rare to see quilts discussed.

You might have to pay $1 to see the article (but the Times lets you see ten articles each month for free).  The article includes a slideshow of 8 quilts made by members of the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland, one of our sister guilds.

Past Event: Rachel Clark speaks tonight at the San Francisco Quilters' Guild meeting

Rachel Clark will be the speaker tonight, Feb 16, 2016,  at the San Francisco Quilters' Guild.

Past event: Alameda County Arts Commission Exhibit - Deadline for Submitting Quilts is September 28th

EBHQ Member Alert!! Here’s a fantastic opportunity to show your work.

Now is the time to choose one or more of your quilts to show in the annual exhibit for the Alameda County Arts Commission. The show is neither judged nor juried but it IS a great way to show your newest work and share our fabulous guild with the city of Oakland.

Quilts will be hung in three secure places for the public to view them beginning October 23^rd– the first floor and fifth floor galleries at 1221 Oak Street and in the Main Entrance Lobby of the Highland Care Pavilion, 1411 E. 31^st Street. Deadline for entries is September 28^th.

It’s Time to Show Your Quilts!

EBHQ’s Alameda County Arts Commission Exhibit

Oct. 23 - Feb. 26, 2016:          Alameda County Administration Bldg., 1221 Oak Street, near the Oakland Museum and just three blocks from Lake Merritt BART

Oct. 23 - June 2, 2016:            Highland Care Pavilion, 1411 E. 31^st Street, Oakland

Don’t miss the chance to be included this year and show off your fabulous work. Both shows are located in well-lit, secure areas with high traffic that are open to the public during normal working hours, Monday through Friday. Our annual show is highly anticipated by the County workers and the public who visit these buildings. What a wonderful way to promote quilting and EBHQ in the East Bay!

We need up to 40 pieces (that have not been previously shown here) in a wide range of styles and dimensions. Quilts can be up to 65” in length and of any width, but small and medium quilts are most welcome and show very well. Quilts will need to have a 4” sleeve sewn on the back.

Timeline:

1. Submit entry forms no later than September 28^th EBHQ general meeting

2. Deliver quilts at one of these events: General meetings on August 31 or Sept. 28, Drop-Ins on Sept. 8 and 19. Or make special arrangements with Jane Herlihy.

3. Show Installation: October 23, 2015

4. Show De-installation: Feb. 26 (County Administration Bldg.) and June 2, 2016 (Highland Pavilion)

5. Quilts returned to you at general meeting following the date of show closure, or by special arrangement.

Entry deadline: New Quilts of Northern California

Guild members may want to enter quilts at PIQF (Oct. 15-18).  You may enter the general show, or the "New Quilts of Northern California".  And you can sign up for classes.  So here are three different signup forms for these opportunities:

The expo portion of the show runs from 10am to 6pm, Thursday the 15th through Saturday the 17th; the expo will also run Sunday the 18th from 9am to 3pm.  (Note:  there will be a sports game beginning around 1 pm on Sunday, which will affect traffic and parking in the area.)

EBHQ usually brings its Opportunity Quilts to PIQF; please sign up to offer white-glove assistance so that we can display our quilts.
